Robin Scott Horrell M.D. Ph.D. is an innovative physician engineer. Dr. Horrell completed his master's and doctoral degrees at Caltech in the department of Chemical Engineering (1987, 1991) and also took courses in the newly formed Caltech department of computational and neural systems (CNS). Dr. John Hopfield, a founder of the CNS department, was a member of his thesis committee and helped guide his early adoption of AI methodologies.
Robin was a co-founder and CFO of NeuroDynamX Inc (NDX 1987–1993), where he and his partners created DynaMind, one of the earliest neural-network general-purpose consumer software packages. Robin worked intimately with Intel as they trained the first analog neural chip, the N64, and explored AI solutions for anti-lock brakes and military applications with the Naval Weapons Research Center. He worked on neural-network rate-responsive pacemaker strategies with Medtronic in the early 1990s, which eventually prompted him to pursue his medical degree (University of Cincinnati 1996).
Enamored with patient care delivery, he pursued residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (University of Louisville 2005). He joined Billings Clinic, a large regional multi-specialty group, as a staff physician, and later chair of the Oto H&NS department (2011–2017). Early in his medical career Robin identified that EMR/EHR software is woefully inadequate, championing that EHRs need to work at the speed of medicine.
His outspoken critiques of the EHR landed him in a leadership role as surgical chief medical information officer (CMIO), where he developed the patented concept of Dynamic Regrouping as a strategy for high-efficiency presentation of electronic medical data. He implemented this in EHR software alongside his colleague GR Gordon-Ross, also a co-founder of HeuriSTX Health. Dr. Horrell also led development of an AI-based no-show forecasting algorithm used internally at Billings Clinic, holds seminal patents in surgical LED devices (founder of Dynamic Light, LLC and LumeNXT, LLC), and holds a patent for a novel separation technology.
